Keyboards

Although not recommended, it is understandable that parents may wish to purchase a keyboard instead of a piano at the beginning stages of piano lessons. It is afterall better to have a keyboard to practice on rather than nothing! These days many piano shops also offer very affordable rental options, and I highly recommend renting a good acoustic piano instead of purchasing a cheap keyboard. I have a keyboard that I use with my Sibelius music writing software, and keyboards are useful for this reason, but for practice purposes, an acoustic piano is simply the way to go if the student wants to make serious progress.
If I can not change your mind and you must purchase a keyboard, then I recommend full size, 88-key, touch-sensitive models. The one shown below from Amazon.com is a good example. Avoid spending too much money on a keyboard, as eventually it will need to be replaced by an acoustic piano as the student becomes more advanced.
